Below is Matt Phillips' Artist Statment
A painting is a forum of different thoughts, decisions, revisions, and compromises. In my work ideas exist as colors, shapes, and forms. These discrete elements are stacked, overlapped, propped, and rested upon one another. Every once in a while, all the disparate parts begin to cohere and repel, and rather benign elements of visual language become more compelling.
